ICICS Welcomes New Director

Robert Rohling, a professor with a joint appointment in electrical and computer and mechanical engineering, has accepted a five-year term as director of the Institute for Computing, Information and Cognitive Systems (ICICS) effective January 1, 2017.

Rohling is internationally recognized for his research in the field of biomedical engineering, with specialization in medical ultrasound. He earned his master’s in biomedical engineering at McGill University and his PhD in information engineering at the University of Cambridge. Prior to coming to UBC in January 2001, he was a project manager at McKesson Medical Imaging Solutions (formerly ALI Technologies, Inc).

Rohling has been a member of ICICS since 2001 and is currently the co-director of the Control, Robotics and Biomed Laboratory, which is the basis of a highly collaborative research program. He is a founder of the undergraduate biomedical engineering option and a co-founder of the graduate biomedical engineering program. He served as director of the Biomedical Engineering Program in 2013/14. With a proven track record of success in administrative and leadership, Rohling is an excellent fit for the directorship ICICS.
